I'm back!

I wanted to write a poem today about the New Orleans Hurricane Katrina situation. If you're reading this five years from now and have no clue what I'm talking about, Hurricane Katrina was a level 5 storm that covered New Orleans, Biloxi Miss. and many other areas in fierce winds and a LOT of water. This happened the weekend of August 27-30 2005, and it's one of the worst natural disasters in U.S. history.

I've been seriously slacking on the poetry writing, so this gave me an opportunity to get creative and put my feelings into words. Here is my Hurricane Katrina poem:

After Katrina

How does it feel when you've lost it all?
Home is where your heart is after the storm
Your street address means nothing now
How does it feel when the water takes your life?
Everything you own washing away in the wet, howling wind

How does it feel to be a wanderer?
Two days ago you sat in the office
Two days ago your life had security
Certainty
Ritual
The office is flooded
Everything's uncertain
Except the certainty of what used to be your house
Washing away in a million pieces
Your diplomas
Your wedding pictures
Junior's MVP trophy
How does it feel to be scared?
Scared of what the future will bring
How does it feel to start over completely?

Some things in life you cannot control
What you can control is what you do in the face of the storm
Perhaps you got out in the nick of time
You're the lucky one, you have an anchor to drop
Perhaps you stayed, perhaps you couldn't leave
You saw it all happen and cried to heaven above
Now you're lost in a sea of anger and frustration
A sea that has changed your life forever

Whoever you are
Wherever you are
Whatever happened to your loved ones, your life
You can do it
You can survive
It will be hard, it will take time
It will take more time than you think you can give
Try as hard as you can, pick yourself up
Dust yourself off
Take that first step toward happiness
Hammer that first nail
Take one look back, then face the future
Face it with determination and strength
You'll live another day, you'll breathe another breath
You'll do what you must
I know you can do it
I know you can
